5 Lenses - British Council's Culture Connects Project

5 Lenses, is working to engage 15 emerging and early career multidisciplinary artists to develop their conceptual skills and further their artistic practices. The project  is a response to underrepresentation of women  in the contemporary art sphere especially around east Africa. The project aims to foster collaboration, knowledge and skill exchange, showcase non-traditional ways of showcasing and exploring art exhibitions, and identify challenges that affect women artists as they navigate the art industry. After 6 months of working together under the Culture Connects Programme, 4Kenyan Artist and 1UK-based writer have produced  a total of 21 artworks that was showcased at The mall Basement, Westlands from 17th Feb 2023 – 4th March 2023  .5 Lenses project is supported by the British Council Cultural Exchange Program, which supports cultural organizations, festivals, artists, and creatives between Sub-Saharan African countries and the UK to create art, build networks, collaborate, develop markets, and share artists’ work with audiences.

Sun, Not Salt - British Council's Culture Connects Project

Ayomitunde’s inspiring project, “Sun not Salt,” aims to raise awareness about the impact of climate change on people living with albinism in Nigeria and the UK. Ayomitunde discusses how he plans to document the unheard stories of albinism using photography, photomicrography, and augmented reality (AR) to debunk myths and stereotypes that affect the community. Through exhibitions, publications, and the power of storytelling, Ayomitunde seeks to drive change and promote inclusive policies that celebrate diversity in society. Digital Loom - British Council's Culture Connects Project

Meet Ireoluwa Soetan, founder of Annaire Arts & Fashion Academy (NG). Through her research project, “Digital Loom,” she explores ways in which traditional weaving craftsmen/centres in Nigeria can collaborate with futuristic designers, digital creators, contemporary designers and design experts to modernize their techniques, making them more attractive to the younger generation while generating wealth. She also looks at the fabrics of Nigeria as a medium for telling the less heard stories of those regions to the UK and other global audiences. She will be highlighting the findings from her research as she interacted with the artists.

Lunatic Line - British Council's Culture Connects Project

Meet the artist behind the “Lunatic Line ” project who collaborated to create a dance movement “Raundi Mwenda,” that uses augmented reality to form a virtual set with landscape, images, and objects that the dancers interacted with to chronicle the development of the Lunatic Line. DanceIntoSpace and therepbirmingham who are the artist behind the project explain what went through in creating the dance and what they were able to achieve through the project.

Ode to The Ancestors - British Council's Culture Connect Project

Sherry Davis, a former Community Action Researcher at Horniman, is collaborating with the National Museum of Kenya to tell the stories of unseen and unsung black heritage professionals in Kenya who were not acknowledged for their contributions to history through her project, Ode to the Ancestors. Kenyans made valuable contributions in the archaeological sites, but their names have not been included in the historical books. The Ode to the Ancestors aims to uncover, commemorate, and celebrate the African Kenyan archaeologists whose names are absent from the archaeological sites.

Kipya Ki? - British Council's Culture Connects Project

The collaborative project ‘Kipya ki?’ brings together emerging artists and curators from Uganda and the UK, specifically Trevor Mukholi and Ibrahim Azab. With support from FOTEA, FORMAT, and New Art City, the project aimed to curate photographers working with emerging forms of photography. The focal point was to showcase innovative ideas and visions within contemporary photography through an immersive online multiplayer exhibition hosted by New Art City.

‘Kipya ki?’ is a Connects Connects project supported by the British Council Cultural Exchange program.

Creating a New Network of 3D Artists - British Council's Culture Connects Project

Linda Devo is a visual artist dedicated to providing a platform for artists with diverse Ghanaian backgrounds. Her aim is to create a valuable space where these artists could come together and be part of the wider conversation about African art.

Her project, Creating a Network of 3D Artists, focused on raising the profile of 3D artists and building a network where knowledge exchange, skill sharing, and research collaboration could take place. The project featured a series of dialogues on her YouTube channel. The Creating a New Network of 3D Artists project is part of the Culture Connects project supported by the British Council Cultural Exchange program.

Celebration of Welsh and Zimbabwean Voices - British Council's Culture Connects Project

Dr Christina Thatcher and Godess Bvukutwa led an incredible project that is a celebration of new Welsh and Zimbabwean voices. The project funded by the British Council’s Go Digital Fund, consisting of three inspiring phases:

Phase 1: When Women Write: Empowered women in Wales and Zimbabwe to share their stories through a digital platform. The project included online workshops, discussions, and writing sessions, resulting in a powerful eBook featuring participants’ work.

Phase 2: Where I’m Writing From: Focused on writer development and cultural exchange through the practice of place writing. This phase included enriching online retreats, mentorship, and the publication of selected works in an eBook.

Phase 3: Can You Hear Us?: Provided an exciting opportunity for dedicated Zimbabwean participants to travel to Wales. It involved face-to-face interactions, readings, workshops, and inspiring discussions with influential Welsh literary figures. This phase showcased the success of the previous stages, fostering cultural exchange and empowering participants to make a positive impact in their communities.

Under the Same Sky - British Council's Culture Connects Project

Under the Same Sky is a remarkable cross-cultural collaboration between Cassandra Wye from the UK and John Namai of Zamaleo Acts in Kenya. Together, they co-produced a training program aimed at nurturing emerging storytellers from marginalized communities in Kenya. The culmination of their efforts was a captivating showcase performance delivered in Swahili, Somali, and English.

The collaboration continues to thrive with a series of online training sessions offered to storytellers and educators worldwide. Additionally, the young tellers who participated in the program continue to perform the showcase at both in-person and online events, spreading their powerful stories and cultural richness.

Under the same sky project is a Culture Connects project supported by the British Council Cultural Exchange program.
